Hi i am new to this site, but signed because i want to download chobits, and so i did, but i can't play the files, i have both windows media player and winam...

I can't get mplayer to change aspect ratio to 16:10. I have widescreen monitors.

And, I'm having a problem in VLC where the sub titles are displayed too large on the screen.

I'd recommend VLC player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It can play most files and since you want to watch anime, I can assure you it'll come in handy very often.
As for the codec, I'm not sure what you've downloaded, but I'd recommend the Combined Community Codec Pack: http://www.cccp-project.net/
And if you have trouble installing the latter, you can simply read the FAQ on that site or check their forum.

I have VLC installed on my Mac but I only use it if I'm going to watch more than one episode at a time. If I'm just going to watch a single episode I usually use Quicktime Player with x264 core audio codec. I've found Quicktime's "Cache" option really useful for playing .mkv files. In VLC the mkv's would often drop frames or stop playing video entirely, the cache (video, audio, text or all) option in Quicktime eliminates this problem. Media player classic still hasn't come out with a stable Mac version so for the time being, I'll stick with Quicktime.

That's why I recommend The KMPlayer... I used many players and as soon as I don't find something better, I use KMPLayer.

That have to be another player, since this KMPlayer isn't designed for linux. In linux, I use VLC, altough he has some problems. I think, you meant this KMPlayer.

Sorry, I don't know totem player... Vplayer is good, but old, it was only one file, and as far as I know it has subtitle editor builtin. I don't know if it is still developed, but you can try.

hmm, why FAT? Isn't it a bit too old? I am using reiserFS on gantoo, but I heard some rumors about ending reiser project, so I think, I'll need to find something new.

Try K-Lite MegaCodec Pack. But you have to change some audio settings there... I cannot remember which and I don't have it installed on this Comp.
