It wont stop with MegaUpload. MU was just the opening salvo of the Fed's war on copyright infringement. Prior to a few years ago, the US G-men could not step foot on foreign soil without authorization from the country's government, but even then the only law in place was DMCA, which does not apply to any torrent site which hosts their content on foreign soil. Today however, the US has seriously ramped up efforts to destroy the big file sharing organizations by leveraging its enormous political influence against all countries in which torrent sites are basing their servers. Therefore, regardless of whether the DMCA applies or not, the US government will find you and shut you down if you are hosting copyrighted material originating from the US. Thats just what it is right now. No one is safe any more. Its not wonder Filesonic is ran like a bitch and killed its file sharing feature entirely, even though it is known as one of the most anti-pirate share sites in the world. The US doesnt care about material from other countries...the only thing it cares about it lost revenue that it can tax, and that only applies to material made in the US. As flawed as the US is, you simply DO NOT want to screw with it, and the chain reaction of overreaction from many file sharing sites is proof of that.
I mean, take a look at the Swiss banks...they are legendarily known for non-disclosure of client financial information. However when the US threatened Switzerland with economic sanctions if it doesn't force the banks to reveal financial information in their attempt to uncover tax evaders, Switzerland buckled like a fat man after a marathon. The only real way to stop what is going on is to change the law, and thats not gonna happen. The more the hacker scenes continue to retaliate, the more of a reason the US has to continue its war on piracy, and it will only get worse. Thats just my take on it. I hope it doesnt go very far, but I have to be prepared for it.
