Yo I'm curious about a thing... Which OS do you use as fav one... When it comes to Linux/Unix plz tell me which distro and which Windowmanager.. Well for me...

I prefer Linux over windows, I'm only using XP because I used to play a lot of games, though I havent touched a game for quite a while now. Maybe I should switch back :P

Yeah, right now I'm in the process of backing everything up (that means burning 300GB of anime, movies and music to blank DVDs) and formatting, then installing Linux.

I use XP. And when I get my new computer I'll get Vista Ultimate. At school we had one course of Linux but all we really did there was installing and downloading system updates and drivers. I've used Knoppix few times to save my files when windows crashed but I really think that I should Install Ubuntu too and try to learn to use it properly.

I like XP and Ubuntu but I need to study Ubuntu more because I haven't used it so much.

hm bsd ...never used it before . What's it like ? Do you have a winmanager, or is it pure console ?
I heard it's also "based on/similar to" unix. What is different and are there similarities to Linux?

Yeah BSD was based on Unix, but that was a long time ago. I just wanted to make it clear.
I guess it's not that much similar to unix anymore, though I must admit that I never used bsd before.
Hm, but it seems like linux is also far from being a unix based kernel it comes from sth. called minix, which is a unix based...maybe uhm :wary:

And dave55man you're certainly right. Compiling can be a pain in the ass.
Ever used ARM cores (minipcs f.ex)? That's a hell of much compiling stuff.

Let's just say that ubuntu is a debian derivate, so the commandstructures are quite similar :v:.
I like my debian more, though I also think that Ubuntu is a very good choice.:haihai:

Believe me, it's all in good cause and having a dual boot is the best way to do it.

Jo Vlad, I just installed the new Ubuntu 7.10 on a ibm 390x laptop with 400mhz and 256mb so-dimm and I must admit,
that it has gotten much better than I remembered it.
It runs just perfect on that old machine. :v:

Windows it's not really good for anything....
Even though some appz are only available for the crap OS....It's not even good in using these....

MS is just a monopoly which keeps his source code looked up (ex. DX,NTFS etc..) and linuxware uncompatible with their os (ex. openoffice docs,ext2/3 etc.)...

My guess is, that the main problem is DX...someone should force them to make the source public.....XD
These people really have earned enough money....

Even if they don't make their sources public....linux will prevail and you will have the full control out of your linux box...:victory1:

I borrowed it from a "friend" several years ago and played some games on it.....and I must admit O.<,
but then one day/night I used it more than 24 hrs without a break....
Guess what happened....when I tried to boot it up the next day ....It really was broken O.O.
I couldn't believe it O.O...what a low quality sh*t!!....... that microbrain stuff!!.

I mean my home-server with linux debian on it runs until 1yr without a break and it still runs just perfect.....:v:
