Doesn't matter Meri, you could put the 3ps parts as if they were diary entries or whatever, just write the story and then worry about the details or how you do it. Just try to keep up the momentum because as soon as you stop to edit the last bit you wrote; you will have trouble getting into the 'groove' again.

Here is my character, you know the one the heroes and villians walk past with out a thought, yes the mad begger, here is his story.

Derfel wasn't really in a good way he had been possessed by a demon(or whatever in your story) but the spirit hadn't been strong enough to control the body the whole time. The resulting condition sent them both quite mad. It wasn't unknown for Derfel to trip over a tree or other supposedly inanimate object and have a very loud and agressive argument with it. If the tree was of a particularly curvy nature Derfel them would elope with it:inlove:, often with the aid of an axe. Derfel's favourite past time was to sit in the street and be called an idiot by everyone, then start screaming and run around alot, everyone would then scatter. He would then collect all the dropped produce and money and eat them both.

P.S. Every story has a comic relief character, he could pop up anywhere. You know in an epic battle, he could wander across the field with a cut up tree, murmering sweet nothings to it. whatever

Don't know if this will help in clarifying the magic dilemma, but in my all time favourite series The Laws Of Magic by Michael Pryor. In it he has brought magic to the world like science, it was all murky and dangerous and no one really trusted those who practiced in it, until it evolved. In his stories the magic was used to propel human technology before its time so they had reliable aircraft before world war 1 and such. The magic is used in a scientific and clinical method, so a spell said wrongly(the language being important) could have reverse effects or not work.

So is the magic on the floating islands a clinical affair or something just spat out in haste and illpreparation like in some books and movies. It would be good to work out the magic completely so its easier to write with some balance. Does the use of magic take energy from the spellcaster or is it like Harry Potter and it doesn't. Are there different types with in the two main ones? Can everybody do it?
If we can resolve these it will making writing easier in the long run!

So we can say that magic has a cost. People who have more magical stamina can cast more spells and more complex spells, while others might be able to manipulate the magic better. Just think of the energy system in Naruto(if you read it). Where some people can use the magic better to do the same spell. eg. a spell needs 5% of your stamnia and it takes you 7% to complete it, so someone who has less stamina might be more effective.

Also I don't think that the floating isles or islands will be living in harmony, cos if you have all these elite guys around there is going to be friction. So maybe the islands are in an uneasy alliance that could break if they aren't careful enough. Also surely there are going to be people who are sympatheic to the people on the ground, so there should be some excecutions of them, just for colour. They'd be all up thenselves too, but would want to help the people and make themselves god and lord it up in palaces and stuff. So they might be sabotaging the floating islands alliance to further their own. whatever, use want you want, they are just some ideas

So how is the book going to be written? Shall it be several authors doing the writing in tag team style. Or is it people writing their own short story of about 5000-7000 words long, using the characters and settings they like. If it is the last one I could probably whip a story up in a couple of days, but I'll wait for the overview.

Caution: I'm writing my own book at the moment so there could be delays or I might get carried away and write too much. Also writing my stuff can drain my creative juices so i'll take longer then I want to.

if you have trouble writing an individual character in with a large group here are some angles to think about.
-Are you writing in first person, so saying I did this or I thought that. If so you could write-I felt uneasy being in this group for so long i have been on my own relying on my own skills and abilities, can I really fit in here?
-Are you writing in third person, so Derfel sat next to the tree, it was beautiful, its slender curves and slight roundness reminded him of the unearthly twin beech trees in the town behind him.
So in first you implant your self into the story, while in third you are observing from the outside, but can still describe the chars feelings and thoughts.

Don't worry if your aren't what you percieve to be as a good writer, if you push yourself and make sure you write a little each day you will write your story. Then it is just a matter of reading it and editing, it is easier to edit a story then write, you may start with 500 words and after editing have 700. Because you can return to the story and expand, without having to worry about creating from nought.O.<

name for islands- The Floating Isles?
As for the postion of the islands, they could be held in the same place by magnetic currents that run through the earth below and this levistone or the chain could be attracted to that. So they stay in place because two magnetic currents (in an X-shape) have caught them.
As for their reletive height to each other and the lost island below, they should be close enough to spy on them and make out city layouts. Some of the islands could be higher then the others, but this would cause tension as the higher ups would feel superior.
Also there would be good and bad people every where, but I think most people are saying the floating islands are trying to take over the lost one. But people could write from a time before, during or after the war if there is one.
In the books I was talking about alot of people had the ability to use magic, but didn't. The author likened it to being able to perform higher mathematics, but your magic theory fits better in this case.

yeah Atlantis is used to often, what i meant was the bigger continent on the sea, that is jealous or something of the floaters(hahahaha), definately gonna use that in my story as abusive slang.

So the three floaters are at equal height and have a good view of the land below with flying animals and looking glasses. they could have pegasi (flying horses) or rocs (really big birds from 1001 Arabian Nights).

About the people on the land below are they all poor and down trodden from their own lords or are the floaters already in control?

Oh and for the name we could use a really fancy name for groups to name them if the previous is too cliche'ed

For beast people they could be either people who used beast magic and went mad and now have the mind of a beast. Or they could be humaniod like animals with animal heads but human like, if that makes sense, also they would need to be similar in size so a crocodile man wouldn't have a massive mouth, just a jaw structure similar to a crocs. Or maybe the beast men are just animals standing on their hind legs and walking and talking like humans. Judge which is the best.

Are these beast people able to live in the normal population? Or are they outcasts living in the inevitable wilds throughout the land

I've already got Genjuu Mugon's ok to use his character and his tower in my story, so now I have to get my character up there to the floating isles. It will be something obvious, ridiculous and stupid, like my story, but I think every story or world needs the crazy people to make it interesting and fun.

Will start to write it when Genjuu puts up more info, it doesn't matter when, i've got plenty to do in the real world, really I do!

I posted my junk and need some feedback people, tell me what is good and what is bad. Short stories are always hard, as you have to pack so much in a small piece.

Also still not really knowing what magic is about, what age we are in, still swords and sorcerey? So we need to get concrete about the world. Everyone who is going to write needs to chuck some stuff in the ring, otherwise the topic will stall again.

So tell me what you thought of my story and what was good and bad, should I develop the character more or just action action!:bravo:
