And since dev's love to make the best games they can, they make it so you need the new hardware. Also alot of games have issues with certain sound and graphics cards, won't play certain brands or models. bah!
By now I play only the older games so I don't run after the newest hardware, but I hear you bro. The thing is you can't mod console games, something that I really love and with good mods the game experience is total superior in my humble opinion that PC is or was the best pick until today... first I was a console man (I went to a PSOne) later I switched to the PC... Simulations like Silent Hunter III (WW2 submarine) stock game is average but lets say 2 years later all the fine mods madea completely new game all enhanced and utterly amazing that it's better than it's successor games (only my opinion of course)... sure thing the devs do not like the fact that the player goes where he don't belong in a matter of speaking but it is not forbitten... yet most things are hardcoded in games these days which makes modding very difficult to impossible (time consuming).
A last example is DoW DC (Dawn of War Dark Crusade (RTS)) there are full race mods (a complete new faction with has a complete custom army with custom models textures sounds you name it)... such a project needs years to be complete... but if finished it is so rewarding no game from stock can touch this experience... excuse my long rant I just like to point a big plus for the PC in the gaming department... well it was a plus by now (newer games) it seems redundant.
All mods are from users for users so free of charge... often a group of ppl work together and form a mod group to reach certain goals together...

I once lost FOUR hours of important gameplay on Oblivion ES5, i nearly cried. I was so immersed in the gameplay, something which the dev's want, that I forgot to save.ARRRGGGGH! Dammit most games have automatic save points, why can't you?
Yeah that is the worst case that can happen to a gamers heart.... but instability is not a console exclusive thing, nor it is on the account of hardware limits... RTW (Rome Total War) a good game in my opinion (PC only?) (with the fine mods out there it's totaly superior LOL) has a random crash once in a while and it's quite possible you save and reload but the date that will cause the crash is saved too... you are dead... to complete this game you need... don't know let's say min 100 hours if you play without the AI help so NICE if you discover such a crash and all your progress your heroic victories are flushed down the toilet... thanks devs... those are tiny erros inside the game code which never were fixed ahhhhhh
edit
mod or modding... means you add or change content of the game and how the game is played if desired maybe simply replace textures or the AI will be altered whatever is possible... it can grow big and totally change the game and push it to another level.
I know by now there are a little modable games for the console... but as example to do new models and put them in... that can't be done without a PC and certain software like 3DSmax or something like that.
