The freshly painted walls were caught on fire as the sinking sun gave off its dying flame. When the ball of flame eventually went into hiding, the living room got robbed off its shinning beauty. The shadows crept back to their minuscule length at the bases of the furniture, and the darkness waited for no one as it spread around the house bringing her friend along. The icy winds carried the scent of the ocean from the beach in front of the house.
Suddenly without sending any warning, the wind increased its force and bellowed through the windows. Papers flew hither and thither, the curtains fluttered vigorously, rising into the air and touching the ceiling where as the songs of hanging glass chimes perched in front of the open main door found their way inside the house.
“Quick shut the door and close the windows!!” yelled the lady of the house.
“I am already on it, mother” a reply came from near the windows in the living room.
But the wind did not make it any easy for Robert as he had to push himself forward with all his might to prevent himself from flying backwards away from his destination.
“Whoa! What are you doing?” exclaimed Robert as he felt someone propelling him forward from behind him.
“I am helping you dummy. Now keep walking forward and don’t you dare trip on me!” said the girl while continuing to push him forward.
With the combined help of two people, the job was finally completed. All the windows were tightly shut and all entrance doors locked. But still the wind howled and the windows rattled as they stopped her from entering.
“Wow! What do you know? Just look at that awful scenery which is being created outside” said Robert, looking at the beach from the shut windows.
“Yeah, that is awful. I hope people will learn their lesson and stop littering the beach anymore. This is such a miserable sight” said the girl
The beach was previously cluttered with empty soda cans and shopping bags. Now instead of just lying on the ground, they were instead flying all over the place and as if the ravaging wind was not enough, the rain joined in the party; quickly seeping into the sand, making it hard for the people who were still vacating the area by dragging them downwards into little ditches.
“Rachael! Robert! Get away from the windows because I will not take you to the hospital in such a condition” said Robert’s mom.
“Right away Mrs. Quinn” said Rachael as she headed towards the couch.
The bell of the telephone rang and Robert answered it
“Good Evening, Quinn residence”
“Hello Robert, this is Mrs. Riley how is everyone?” asked the caller
“Oh! Rachael’s mom!” exclaimed Robert, “yes yes, everyone is alright” he answered.
“Thank heavens!” sighed Mrs. Riley “This storm is something, is it not?” talked Mrs. Riley
“She definitely is a strong one, she is” replied Robert.
“Well I am glad that everyone is safe and sound, it is all good at our side too” said Mrs. Riley; “that is not considering the wind banging on our doors” continued the caller, laughingly.
“Well its going to get quite chilly in here, you better get the coal running and covering inside a blanket in front of the fire” suggested Robert.
“Of course dear, and the same goes for everyone at your place, just don’t forget a hot mug of cocoa” replied Rachael’s mother.
“Yes that is a good idea, well I will tell Rachael, you called and please send my regards to everyone else” said Robert.
“Will do and the same from our side. Good bye now” finished Mrs. Riley
“Take care.” Said Robert and placed the phone back on its holder.
He turned around and smiled at Rachael
“it was your mom, just checking up on you. Everything is fine at her place, nothing serious” he told Rachael
“Aah, glad to hear that” sighed Rachael
“Here boys and girls! Come take your drinks.” Robert’s mom came in from the kitchen holding a tray in her hands.
“Mom!” exclaimed Robert
“Mrs. Quinn, please let me!” exclaimed Rachael while walking towards Rina.
Rachael stretched her arms to take the tray of hot coca milk from Robert’s mom.
“Oh no dear, I’m alright. If you want to help then please take yours and Roberts mug from here” said Rina smiling while lifting the tray off from Rachael’s arms.
Rachael did as told and handed one of the mugs to Robert who took it while thanking her in return.
The storm was still raging on outside their house. The sand on the beach was moving in swirls, almost everyone had deserted the area and were safely resting in their homes.
“Man, I’m beat!” Robert yawned, stretching his arms above him and behind.
“That was quite good Mrs. Quinn, like always” chuckled Rachael, getting up and taking the empty mugs from Robert and Rina.
By the time Rachael returned from the kitchen she saw that Rina was snuggling in her woolen blanket and Robert was dozing off while trying to stay awake with slight shakes of his head. Rachael walked back into the room to stand in front of the crackling fire. Robert lifted his arms and Rachael sat down snuggled into his embrace and shut her eyes.
“Mmmph, you are so warm” cooed Rachael lovingly and hugged Robert slightly tighter.
Robert smiled and stared into the fire. Soon he too dozed of into the land of relaxation.
“Where am I?” the man questioned, “what is going on!!” he shouted.
Everything was pitch-dark, he dared not move for fear of falling into an unseen pit. The young man turned himself to the left, he turned to the right. He strained his eyes to peer into the vast darkness for even a slightest speck of light.
Suddenly far off into the distance a light glowing dimly caught his gaze. It was a faint glow but any light in this darkness was a glimpse of hope no matter how small. The lone man slowly and steadily started to walk towards this ray of salvation. But no matter how much he walked towards the light, the further the distance seemed to become. Soon the poor fellow gave up and exclaimed,
“Is some one there? Anyone!? Please save me” he pleaded.
And out of the heavens a bright light, beamed down in front of him which was blinding in its intensity. Bubbles of blue energy moved upwards in a stream.
Like a stunned person the man staggered behind and fell down on his bottoms. When the light’s intensity lowered and his vision focused, a young woman in a white flowing night-gown stood before him. Judging from her appearance she would have been in her mid-twenties, long-smooth slender legs, body beautifully curved like an hour glass, face of an angel and green eyes of a temptress with fiery waist-length red hair flowing behind her.
The young chap was left speechless by the beauty this sole person radiated; and then her lips parted.
“Save me, someone please save me” she pleaded with a voice that seemed to be of an angel.
“Some one, anyone, please save me” she begged once again.
The man on the ground slowly and shakily stood up, the light shining in front of him, illuminating his young face. Robert gazed directly into the angels eyes, words flowed out of his mouth,
“Dear God, I must be in the presence of an angel!” he said a bit surprised while still in awe.
For the first time the lady in the night-dress looked at him, her eyes shifting to relief.
“Save me, find me, release me please” she pleaded to the only person there with her.
Robert did not know what to make out of all that was happening to him,
“Am I dead? Am I in heaven?” he asked her these questions.
She looked at him with those enchanting eyes,
“You surely are not dead nor in heaven…”
“Then where the bloody heck, am I? And what is going on?” he interrupted her, clearly with fear creeping into his voice.
“Please you have to save me for I have suffered long and wish to be at ease.” The lady in white said.
A wild expression of shock crept onto Robert’s face “you, you are a gh…gho…ghost.” Robert staggered back pointing his finger at the white soul.
“Please do not be afraid, I mean you no ill!!” she exclaimed worriedly.
“Wha…what do you want?” stammered Robert.
“I don’t have much time, you have to find me” she pleaded once again.
The light started to dim and the darkness was creeping back, filling the only lit place and Roberts’s refuge.
“Don’t go!!” he shouted back, “what am I supposed to do?” he asked.
The spirit of the dead girl lifted into the air and as it started to float backwards, she raised her hands toward Robert as if she wanted to give him something. Her face held an expression of longing.
“Wait; what am I supposed to do? What is you name?” shouted back Robert at the drifting figure.
She was gone and the light almost consumed by the darkness. Robert stood there, his hand stretched in front as if he wanted to hold onto the light, grab it to feel secure.
Then as the light almost flickered off, the angelic voice resonated through out the darkened area, “Selene…Mystery-Mound…save me” and then there was silence.
“Mystery-mound…Selene?” Robert pondered on the last words which came from the spirit.
“Selene might be her name but what in the world is the meaning behind mystery mound?” he asked himself.
A few seconds might have been given to Robert to ponder on these words when, without any warning, a strong gust billowed from behind, almost knocking him forward into the ground.
The wind billowed and howled, and all Robert could do was crouch down into the ground, covering himself with his coat. But the wind didn’t stop and the howling didn’t cease. Gust after gust slapped him and as if things could not get worse, the ground around him started to glow red and without warning cracks appeared, snaking their way in every directions.
All Robert could do was look in fear and bewilderment as the ground around him shook and debris started to float up into the air.
Robert was beyond freaked out, he just wanted everything to stop, everything to end. He’d clearly had enough of this bizarre reality.
“Stop, Stop it” he screamed.
The ground tore open, red beams shot up into the dim lit sky like fire geysers. As Robert looked on, his body gave a shudder and his hair stood up on end for creatures only seen in mythical movies or fantasy stories shot out of the glowing pits. Winged demons with horns protruding out of their fore-heads, bodies that of vile lizards, smooth skin, pointed faces, evil grins on their mouths flitted out in endless amounts.
Robert dared not move for fear of falling into these open pits of hell.
The winged demons screeched loudly, their piercing sound resonating all around Robert, forcing him to cover his ears.
“Make it stop, enough!!” screamed Robert at the top of his lungs and he closed his eyes shut.
Suddenly, everything quieted down. The intense silence astonished Robert. He opened his eyes and found out that he was at the beach which was in front of his house. But that didn’t relieve him as what he saw was chillier than the demons screaming before. Grains of sand, hill loads of sand was floating into the air in suspended motion. Robert shakily stood up, dusted the sand from his legs and back. He walked cautiously towards the nearest heap of suspended sand. He outstretched his hand and slowly brought his hand closer to the sand. As soon as he touched the gravity-defying phenomenon, the sand parted and a white soul-specter broke through and sped towards Robert, howling like the wind.
Robert yelped and crossed his arms to shield himself. The specter howled and passed straight through him, disappearing into the space behind Robert. Robert screamed and fell back on to the ground. Along with him so did the sand. Robert covered his face so as to stop any of it from entering into his eyes and mouth.
The sand flowed like a river, Robert moving in the flow. All the suspended sand was now back where it was supposed to be, on the ground, or was it. Robert stood up, once again shaking all the sand off him. The wind was still blowing and howling but with much less vigor than before.
Robert had no idea at that moment that he was standing on a huge mound, from which he looked down towards the sea.
The big-blue was calm and the wind had stopped now. Dawn was approaching quickly. Robert walked down silently towards his house thinking that the storm had passed and everything will be back to normal, come the morn.
But little did he know that his normal life that he once knew had been ripped away from him. For a new chapter of his life’s journey had begun, far more different than any that he’s known so far.
