Best DVD to (whatever) converter

what's the best (and when I mean best, I mean a converter so easy a n00b can do it) converter that people regularly use?

Hmmm... hard to say... everyone uses something else. I use VirtualDubMod, DVD2Avi...

I would recommend VirtualDub(only avi) or VirtualDubMod(.Mkv v1 +*.avi) for this. Just cut the video and save the files.

oh, well nvm then I've found 2 useful programs AutoGK and mkvmerge GUI, but I do have a question: now I just used AutoGK for the first time (successfully) and ripped off a 6-ep DVD, problem is, it's all combined into one big file. How can I break down the file into these episodes?

I use Convert X to DVD. I use it all the time. I can go up to 10 eps. at a time if there small enough and they're kept seperate on the disc so you can go to any ep you want. I downloaded it from a torrent with a keygen so it can be registered for updates. I've been using it for over a year with no problems. All series and movies I get I use it and put it on discs. It work with all formats even rmvb.
