hmm maybe it's related to the Operating System you've got? Win7 can do some tricky stuff. If you've got Win7 make sure you apply the patch as admin.
Sometimes the gold versions of games simply can't be pachted, that's also an option.
Maybe you need to patch in steps... check the info of the patch if it's one that covers all between your version and the 1.69. Also get the correct one when it comes to languages a German version might need a German patch and so on...
