    I have another Japanese question. I'm watching Astarotte's Toy, which is a very sweet comedy. the Astarotte from the title is a young girl, and at one point she is asleep, and says something that is translated as Mother, which sounded to me like:
    hoho we

    But the term I've learned for mother is Oka-san. So can anyone shed some light on this? :)

    [FONT=Century Gothic]Okasan is the everyday term used for mother while Hah haue(??? I forgot how to spell either word correctly and am too lazy to look it up:P) is the endeared/formal term for the same word.[/FONT]

      I think its like the difference between mom, mother, mommy and so on, not to mention any accents

        i think it's Haha-ue

        it's a 'formal' term for 'okaasan'

        there's several word used for 'mother'
        okasan is most common,
        mama commonly used by little children,
        boys sometimes call their mother 'ofukuro'
        haha-ue used by 'aristocrat' (in other word, it's not commonly used by people these days)
