Negi Springfield is a ten-year old wizard from Wales, who dreams of becoming a “Magister Magi” (Meaning “Master of Magic” or “Master Mage” in latin translation). Negi’s reason for becoming a Mage is to find his father, Nagi Springfield, Who is the legendary mage also known as the “Thousand Master”, who is believed to be dead. After Negi graduated from the Merdiana Magic Academy is Wales, Negi is given a duty, which is a cover in the real world, and training, before he can actually become a Magister Magi. His duty is to become an English teacher at Mahora Academy in Japan. He leaves his Cousin and heads to Japan to complete his task. His task will not be easy though because as a teacher, he will be teaching a Middle School class of 32 older girls. As the series progresses he is faced with challenges and magical threats from inside and outside Mahora Academy that gains him acceptance and respect from his girls. Although each girl has her own back story and personality, Negi’s main relationship lies with the one called Asuna Kagurazaka, which not only is she his student but also his roommate, who dislikes him, but after finding out he is a mage she was asked to make what is called a “Pactio” (To transfer some of his/her magic power to the other person involved in the pactio, the Minister Magi, improving the Ministra's natural capabilities, and providing a magical barrier against physical attacks. The Minister also receives a special magical item called "Artifact", which reflects the Minister's abilities and personality. The Minister, in turn, has to protect the Magister from any dangers and assist him/her in any way possible.) , becoming his partner and then later accepting him as a friend, she helps him solve clues to find his father.
Characters:
I would post all the characters names, but there are far to many of them I mean it’s 32 female characters alone! So I will only post the Main Characters, starting with:
Kagurazaka, Asuna: (Japanese Voice Actor: Kanda, Akemi- English Voice Actor: Christian, Luci) She sits in seat #8. Asuna has been known to have quite a short temper and frequently her actions are a bit rash, but at the same time , has some aspects that display her maturity, especially when it comes to doing the right thing. Although Asuna really detests Negi, over time she becomes like a big sister role model to him, as she does resember Negi’s cousin, Nekane , in a way. She isn’t exactly the brightest student, she is shown to have strong fighting skills and is a compassionate person when it comes to people that are important to her. She is also part of the “Baka Rangers” (A name for the 5 worst students in Negi’s class)
Ayase, Yue: (Japanese Voice Actor: Kuwatani, Natsuko- English Voice Actor: Palencia, Brina) She sits in seat #4. Yue is Nodoka’s best friend, and is often seen around bother her and Madoka. She’s short and at times has a blunt way of speaking to people, but is generally a friendly person. She likes to read but ironically doesn’t like to study and is one of the “Baka Rangers” (A name for the 5 worst students in Negi’s class). She later becomes the 5th person to make a “Pactio” with him.
Miyazaki, Nodoka: (Japanese Voice Actor: Noto, Mamiko- English Voice Actor: Clark, Leah) She sits in seat #27. She is class 2/3-A’s resident bookworm, Nodoka is quiet, shy and timid, harboring romantic feelings for her homeroom teacher, Negi Springfield. Nodoka is the second person to establish a probationary contract (“Pactio”) with Negi and gain a Pactio Card.
Hasegawa, Chisame: (Japanese Voice Actor: Shimura, Yumi- English Voice Actor: Glass, Caitlin) She sits in seat #25. She is grumpy, unsocial and views her classmates as idiots and freaks, citing that it is obvious that chachamaru and mana don’t belong in the school and that 10 year old Negi teaching the class does not make any sense. However, as much as Chisame avoids any and all attention in the real world, in the privacy of her own room, she takes on the persona of Chiu, a famous Net Idol, devoted to cosplay. Chisame is extremely skilled with computers, and she is able to hack into larrge databases with minimal effort. After finding out about Negi being a Mage, she reluctantly becomes part of Negi’s group, forming a Pactio with him.
Konoe, Konoka: (Japanese Voice Actor: Nonaka, Ai- English Voice Actor: Rial, Monica) She sits in seat #13. Konoka is Negima’s perfect “wife-to-be”, as Negi himself puts it. She is mild-mannered and kind, acting like the perfect counterpart for Asuna. She sometimes has trouble understanding what’s going on.
Sakurazaki, Setsuna: (Japanese Voice Actor: Kobayashi, Yuu- English Voice Actor: Leigh, Cherami and Schultes, Dana) Setsuna is a Shinmeiryu swordswoman from Kyoto who was tken in by Eishun Konoe, Konoka’s father and the leader of the Kyoto Mage Association. She is childhood friends with Konoka and her protector. Setsuna later makes a Pactio with Negi. Due to her training she’s also skilled in anti-demon arts and is the one who tught Negi how to create shikigami from paper. Setsuna is a hanyou like Koutaro, in particular a crow. She was expelled from her people because white wings are considered a bad omen, and it was implied by Evangeline that she is an albino using hair dye and contact lenses to appear human.
McDowell, Evangeline Athanasia Katherine: (Japanese Voice Actor: Matsuoka, Yuki- English Voice Actor: Bailey, Laura) She sits in seat #26. Evangeline A.K.A McDowell is actually a centuries –old vampire cursed to remain at the school by Nagi Springfield, the father of her teacher Negi Springfield. Initially an antoganist for Negi due to his father’s actions, she eventually becomes an important teacher and guid for the young mage and allies as the fight and search for his missing father. However, Eva remains cruel, powerful mage in her own right.
My view on the series: This anime takes a bit before it get’s into the good stuff, however it takes off once it get’s to that point. It is very funny and all the girls in this anime are all different in looks and personality. It has a lot of running gags that will make you laugh and you will find yourself loving all the characters. If you watched Love Hina then I recommend watching this anime because it was made by the same person.
