It seems like a lot of folks I meet on fansub group sites are interested in learning about or getting involved in fansubbing. The problem is, the only position most fansub groups are always on the lookout for is a translator.
Out of all the tasks that are part of fansubbing, learning to translate is the one that takes the longest and requires the most outside resources. With the number of free programs available on the internet, the technical details of fan-subbing--subtitling, type-setting, and encoding--can be learned fairly well in a period of weeks or months.
Now encoding is a little bit more complicated than just adding subtitles, and it's not part of Aegisubs functions, so we'll be skipping that. There are also many other, possibly better, programs out there for type-setting. While aegsiub can do it, it's not necessarily your best option. So most of the tutorials and how-to's I'm going to link to are for subtitling.
I don't have an enormous amount of experience with true fan-subbing myself. But until someone better comes along, I'd be happy to answer questions from anyone interested in learning to use aegisub.
