Teme is a bastard?

I keep hearing something that sounds like teme which is usually translated as bastard, does anyone know the actual word? and does it really mean bastard? or is it just a generic insult?

It seems like the reason 'teme' is an insult is because you'd never say it to anyone without intending to insult them. So its not so much WHAT you say (you) as it is HOW you say it(you! evil monkey pointing) ?

As an interesting note, yes 'anata' is a polite form of the pronoun 'you' although you won't see it very often and 'you' in general is not quite used as frequently in Japanese as it is in English. Instead the person is refered to directly or if the context is clear the subject of a sentence can be omitted all together. For example "Terebi wo mite imasu ka?" could be translated as "Are (you) watching TV" or "Is (she) watching TV" or even "Is (Obama) watching TV". The subject is not present in the sentence and hence its meaning is derrived from the context of the conversation. This is often where machine translation fails miserably. Hope this doesn't bore you too much. I know it often more fun to just use the language than to analyse its nuts and bolts.
