Anyways, when she asked if you [COLOR=Blue]wanted [/COLOR]to marry her, she meant if you wanted to marry her in the coming future.
Is she had said "Will you marry me" ? Then she was talking about the near future, maybe a month or 2 :)
But that's not what she wants, She may be living together (honestly I don't know how that is happening :P ) my best guess is that the 2 of you are University students and so are living together in a rented apartment and not in either one's parents homes XD
I also don't know if the parents of both of you are aware of the 2 of you living together and the intimacy level between both of you. <.<
But all that aside, Yes it's too early to get married in this era at your age. (I guess it would be okay in the past century or 2 :D)
So now that you already blew your chance and your girl-friend is constantly talking to all her friends at the very moment (well it started as soon as you were alone from her and she got onto the phone with her friends)
I can imagine her going like this :
Your GF's friend(s): So did you ask him? Tell us what happened?
Your GF: Yeah like I asked him If he wanted to marry me and guess what he said?
Your GF's friend(s): He said Yes offcourse!
Your GF: That git said "I need some time to think"
Your GF's friend(s): Whaaaat!!!
Your GF: From all the thing he could say, "I'll think about it" WTH does he what to think about!! For God's sake we are freaking living together!! we practically ARE married!! What does he need time to think about for!!? It's not that I want to get married this very day, Is he dumb or what!? Cause I sure am not :angryfire:
Your GF's friend(s): Awww don't worry to much, he was just shocked, surprised at your sudden question which you gave it to him out in the blue.
Your GF: Yeah but still he should have said a little bit less cliche
Your GF's friend(s): Well actually it's the Guy who asks the Girl to marry him and then the girl says that she needs time XD so it's okay if he freaked out, just let it slip. he'll come around, probably he is at the moment asking his friends what to do, Lets just wait and see what happens next, You just act normal and behave like you never asked him the question.
Your GF: Alright, I'll wait for the Mr.I-need-time-to-think to see what he thinks. Thanks for listening to me

what you can do is say that you are sorry for being a fool, and that you definitely weren't prepared for that question, specially coming from you, as you know it's usually the guy who asks it. Apologize again for being such a git and ask forgiveness.
Then take out a small box with a ring inside while getting down on your knees.
look into her eyes and say
I <your full name> am willing to spend my whole life with you <GF's full name> for eternity, till death do us apart. I know that there are other stuff in between but I thought I would leave those part out for the church.
Then go to open up the box (don't open it fully yet)
It's not much but it's all I could get, You know that not even the finest cut jewel or ring could ever sparkle or shine any better than you
Open the lid now
You don't have to say anything right now but this just to let you know that I will always be devoted to you as long as I live. Take this offering as an engagement ring, and know that I will always be ready whenever you want to get married. May it be today or may it be in 5 years. Whenever you are ready I will be ready to slip the ring on your finger in front of all our friends and family. Now please say something before my cheeks get any redder and feel like a total fool

Either she will say yes I will marry you
or she will say let me think about it
or she just take the ring and slip it onto her finger and look at it lovingly with her eyes sparkling
Anyways you will have fixed the problem that you made for not saying yes at the cafe or wherever you were when she popped the question :P

The ring doesn't need to be a diamond or jeweled or anything really fancy and expensive.
It can be cheap but not too cheap, a moderate priced one that you could afford with all the money you have
Doesn't need to be a platinum or titanium ring as I said nothing extravagantly expensive (coz you will need to buy her a real wedding and/or engagement ring later on when everything will be official like when you are really going to get married or so {couple of years later})
