As an alternative, some USB flash drives already have password protection. I have a Sansa brand one with U3 technology that I actually keep some files stored on, and its password protected. If I have to reset the password, it will wipe the entire flash drive.

true crypt is okay, but you can't use it portable or on public computers

FreeOTFE has a portable explorer version that does not require admin capability to do it, but it will show up as a single file instead of hiding the partition. it's up to you.
