No, I haven't really mastered the moves either, I find it quite difficult as well. Button mashing can only get you so far. You need to know what you're doing most of the time.
I mostly like to play with Noel, since I'm a lot better playing with her. Though Arakune (the blob thing you mentioned) isn't too hard to handle either, too bad his moves don't do that much damage though.
