Personally I was never a proponent of Sony being such greedy bastards when it came to the PS3. Releasing 3 different versions at release made no sense. They should have bit the bullet and released one version with at least PS2 compatibility. They have been haggling customers for too long at this point for any excuse to work. The slim is cheaper, yes, but at the cost of many features. When is Sony gonna get their shit together and release one product that has it all like the old days? Some things just never change.
