I really haven't found that, myself...just the ones that actually make it to US dvd's, or the big screen. For example, "The Secret World of Arietty". The same studio also did "Tales of Earthsea", I believe. What they are doing, really, is just animating classic novels. Arietty is just part of "The Borrowers", and old set of books for kids, British I believe. The last time classics were animated, eventually people got sick of them, and the popularity died off. The animation is along the lines of the 70's animations such as Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, The White Seal, The Hobbit, and a few others....basically anything from the 70's by Rankin-Bass or the occasional Hanna-Barberra or Sid&Marty Krofft!
And as for being too old for anime, you need to watch to be up on trends. If cartoons were only for kids, the comic industry couldn't exist, half the new Marvel and DC movies wouldn't exist, and many artists would be out of business!
There have also been "adult" cartoons for AGES....to go way back, Betty Boop was originally considered "racy". Then there were the "Fritz the Cat" videos (Look them up on Netflix, kids!). There's also American Pop, and my all-time favorite "Heavy Metal", and the year 2000 release "Heavy Metal:FAKK2", and many others!
Hentai is even worse! Where our American culture has always had rated R and maybe a mild porn, the Japanese culture has had tentacle sex since the classic woodprint days! Not to mention those piston-driven sexual energy demonic uber-machines from Urotsukidoji 2 !
cartoons and anime for kids only? Not in MY lifetime, not BEFORE my lifetime, and probably not in my kids' lifetimes either!
