I'm tired of WinAVI, so does anyone know of a good freeware vob to avi video converter?

Thanks in advance.

For me

If I wanna rip/convert my DVD, I use handbrake
If I wanna convert Mkv to Vob (for my PSP/PS3), I use mkv2vob
If I wanna convert video file to another, I use mediacoder

But when I'm subbing(fansub) I usually use meGUI (for mkv) and VirtualDub (for AVI - hardsubtitle)

I was using avidemux. It seemed to work, but I lost the audio. I think I just didn't configure it right.

Problem is the video is 8GB, and it takes a long time to encode.

Solamente in Espanol. Por supesto. Well gracias anyway.

I found something called xvid-4psp, looks promising.

Thanks, I finally wound up using Avidemux.

My new problem is I have a high-def mkv file, that uses a newfangled video codec. I was able to convert the file from mkv to avi, but I lost the sound in the process.

I'll just keep tinkering till I get it right, but thanks for all your suggestions.

H264(MPEG-4) format. But it's in high-def. I once had the same problem with the new One Piece episodes by Kaizoku fansubs, but VLC played them fine.

Got mkv merge, I needed it when I got the entire run of Urusei Yatsura, works great as long as the idx and sub files are good.

Thanks, Mr. Dawes, I'll check it out. Don't bother leaving it on the site for me, I may not be here much longer.

Yeah well, it was fun while it lasted.

I didn't know anyone watched Stargate SG-1. I watched the first three seasons when it was on showtime, but couldn't keep up with it after that. I think netflix may add more seasons on instant viewing, maybe it's time to play catch up.

The def isn't the issue as long as it'đ supported with codec. But if the codec is supported by the encoding program you use, that is a different question...

I can't recommend Avidemux, since I haven't used it for a long time now. I'm stuck with VD, VDM and NanDub. If MKV 2.0 needed I use MKVmerge

IF it is for purpose of making rip. Try these: DVD2Avi, DVD shrink etc...

OMG, now I know, I forgot to ask you about codecs used for that MKV file. Are they supported?

Link is enough.
Btw, the problem was solved probably so no need to write more.

Try Mediacoder: MediaCoder - more than a universal audio/video transcoder
It can decode/encode just about anything. It bundles a ton of command line decoders/encoders into one gui, so you just set a bunch of options and it does the long command line input for u. Although, you have to understand codecs and containers and various other video stuff pretty well in order to use it otherwise it's pretty confusing. But it's good overall.

if u didn't fix the problem already

I've used VOBtool 0.0.6 for awhile now. You can find it at Download VOB Tool 0.0.6 - A tool for analyzing, joining and deleting segments from VOB files - Softpedia. If that link doesn't work - let me know - I can email the file to you - or is there a place to upload it to on this site?

It also opens .VRO files [fom DVD-RAM movies]. It's been awile since I used it, but I think it saves to avi or mpg format.

Oops! It saves in the vob format and didn't work on my "Stargate" dvd. It is working on a dvd I made though. If I remember right [this is getting scary] you can rename the extention to ".mpg".

Yup. I renamed the file with the ".mpg" extention and it played fine in JetAudio, Power DVD 5.? - not so good in windows media player [it streched it]. So you can extract vob to vob to mpg with homemade dvds or dvd-ram discs with this tool.

It would be no problem to send it to you, Mr. brokenhands. The file is 236Kb and you just drop it anywhere on the computer to use it [no install]. I'll look to see if I can upload it for anyone anyway. It's freeware.
